Bertie
Reclining, rejoicing and perfecting the art of being a professional spooner, we give you the absolutely lovely Bertie! At around 6½ years old, this handsome, larger-than-medium mixed-breed lad is currently enjoying sofa cuddles in his Newton Abbot, Devon foster home, but he's still searching for somewhere to truly belong. Bertie is a second-chance adoption through no fault of his own. His previous owner adored him, describing him as a lovely boy, but a change in family circumstances meant she could no longer manage his size and strength. Since arriving in foster care, Bertie has won hearts wherever he goes. Our volunteers, home checkers and charity manager have all fallen for his affectionate, intelligent and joyful nature, with more than one saying they would adopt him in a heartbeat if circumstances allowed! He's a real people-loving boy who enjoys tummy rubs, back scratches, toys and, naturally, a good cuddle. He learns quickly, settles beautifully in the home, sleeps through the night and is house proud. He's been wonderful around cats, dogs of all sizes, including little dogs who like to make their opinions known, and is suitable for older, dog-savvy children. He's also shown himself to be relaxed around new people, adaptable during journeys and remarkably tolerant of new experiences. Bertie can pull a little when excited on walks, but responds well to gentle guidance and is already showing how quickly he learns. At this stage in his life, Bertie isn't asking for anything complicated. He wants a garden, adventures, walks, time to explore and, most importantly, people to call his own. He's used to having a home and is desperate to belong again. We really do want this to be Bertie's last move. He's given everyone he meets a reason to fall in love with him, and now it's time for someone to give him the forever home he deserves. Could you be Bertie's person? 🤎🐾

About Bertie
Reclining & rejoicing in the Newton Abbot Devon area we give you middle aged Marsh mellow & lovable spooner ‘Bertie’- charming his way into every heart & looking for his place in this life. Great with cats & in his prime :) © My personality in my own words & that of the LOVELY & compassionate people I’ve met along the way including the charity that is rehoming me To get the sad bit out of the way, I’m a 2nd chance adoption, currently sprawled out on a sofa having cuddles in the ‘Newton Abbot’ area. I was only with my previous owner a short time arriving at the end of October 26’ when the ladies son was hospitalised & she felt I was a little too strong & taller than her current circumstances could cope with. I adored my new owner very quickly & she described me as ‘a lovely boy’. I went for walks with her and her visiting daughter straight away after a long stressful journey though wasn’t phased by any of the new sights & sounds. Her daughter said she found me ‘easy to walk’. She thought I was such a gorgeous dog that she said to the charity & I quote, ‘if I didn’t have my spaniel already I’d have adopted him- he’s an absolutely lovely dog’ unquote. Can I just interject here please Bertie? leesa here- I’ve noticed quite a pattern because our volunteers Karen & Jo also fell for your beautiful nature & stated that they’d snap you up if they weren’t a full house already. Bertie you’re sure popular. Thanks Leesa. I also play with toys & learn very quickly. I love my squeaky toy. You can see my joy at being with people in a home. They said l’m ‘intelligent’ and slept all through the night on only day three. I went outside to do my toilet on just day two. They noted I can reach food if you leave it lying about haha but then that’s a dog for you. I was given a bone by my current foster as soon as I met her and I didn’t guard it or eat it. I took it gently and just kept it company. I’ve been relaxed in a car during the stressful transitions and even if I don’t receive compassion and understanding I’ll bounce back. I am such a loving dog and respond to kindness & common sense. In fact I was such a golden boy that the charity manager took me on one of her home checks. I met new people, the resident cat, their 5kg rescue dog & the home checker. I was a model guest throughout. When someone accidentally trod on my paw (a team member of the charity during a walk) & a child I’d never met rushed up to stroke me on my head I did so well communicating pain for the former & tolerance for the latter. I’m so adaptable I really deserve the very best. I’m desperate to belong. Thank you for resting love Bert. I’d like to add as the charity owner that Bertie must not be failed again. In the words of a home checker meeting Bertie for the first time please marvel at what he has to offer:- “Bertie is such a lovely soul , he loves a tummy rub , and a back scratch , he listens when you tell him no , he was gentle around the dog who lives at the house I visited , while she was barking at him , no reaction or aggression towards her at all. There was a cat at the property , who appeared at one point , Bertie just sniffed him and made no attempt to chase or follow. I am smitten by this gorgeous boy , he will make the most fabulous family member for whoever adopts him. I would adopt him in a heartbeat if I had the space , but 3 is enough for now. He does pull on the lead slightly , but that is something that all dogs do when excited to be out. He deserves a lovely forever home Jo BTC Volunteer/ Home checker” And below a testimony from our Charity manager:- “Bertie I met Bertie the first time, when i was asked if i would assist his owner with his walks. He was excitable, pulling as we first left but quickly settled. He was a little loathe to get in the car, however i threw a treat in and off he went!! We got to the field and it was fairly dark, but didn't phase Bertie at all. He stood still when another dog went past but didn't bark, lunge , or react at all . The next day he was so happy to see me. Waggy tail and a real smile. Jumped in the car with no treat, walked beautifully and pulled gently. All i needed to do was a little pull back on the lead and he slowed down. On only his 3rd day in the Uk he was amazing. I had several meets with Bertie. Each time he grew more and more excited to see me. I love all dogs, but I wasn't prepared for the attachment I had with him. I felt so sad for him, so much so that if i didn't have a dominant male , or if he was a female, I would have taken him in a heartbeat. Once Bertie gets to know you, he is such a cuddler, a loveable lad, who will be the perfect companion.... Karen x”
