Golden Oldies & the Slightly Tarnished What can they give you? These are the special dogs waiting for special people. Is that you?

The senior citizens of the canine world have just as much to offer as our elderly folk. They have been there, done that & written the book. Have you thought about what they can give you? Golden oldies do not require the day to day commitment of some dogs. If you’re at work they will curl up and wait for you to come home. If your there all day their company is invaluable, like the hearth in the house. Our rescue spin-off group ‘Golden Oldies Dreams’ created to find homes for the seniors & physically challenged features these loyal & low maintenance mutts. These boys ‘n’ girls just need a bit of buffin’. When I went on a walk with a golden oldie recently it went through my mind that it was one of the easiest, gentlest & agreeable experiences I’ve had with an animal. At the same time many of them whether old, blind or three legged can keep up with youth driven environments. Ask me about 15yr old Burton who was adopted by a young glamorous couple with small children and adolescent dogs going on regular road trips & holidays to Cornwall together. It’s Burton you see running across the fields. He is the epitome of why I’m writing this. The disadvantaged dogs aren’t defined by their disability’s and their resolve and spirit see them bouncing on back. Some Goldie’s are Spritely, some naturally ambling like slow marsh mellows- they just take their personalities into their age like we do. Their Dream is our Objective. When someone comes to take a younger dog these dogs are at the back of the cage dreaming about a fire to warm them, hearing a soft voice or feeling a gentle touch. When the people walk away and they’re left there in their loneliness, they’re dreaming about their special person taking them, to care for them in their dotage- kindness laughter, comfort and above all company. Care, comfort and company- the three magical c’s- don’t we all need that as we are getting older ? They have been chained up, ignored, left in mud, cold, without shelter, thrown stale bread and then when they are too infirm, Ill through neglect, injured, even pregnant they get cast away at a time in their lives that they are least able to survive in the world. Long, long days tethered in the same spot never spoken to never walked, never loved- imagine that if you can. They should have kindness- basic kindness and they should all know what that it is for the remainder of their days. It doesn’t matter how many days, months or years they have to experience that joy - we can make their dreams come true. Golden oldies & dogs with one eye for example don’t necessarily need a bank balance just because of their years & uniqueness.We can find a match for all. Don’t rule out the older dogs or the handicapped & impaired. They don’t just need us, we need them.
